︎GABRIELA MARIA CORRETJER CONTRERAS

︎(1995, Rio Piedras,Puerto Rico) is a New York based artist who utilizes textiles, installations and performance as a way of imagining a future for a society with an “identity crisis”.

︎characterized by using “Lo que hay”;found materials and scraps that connect to a certain memory, space or time.Through the creation of clothing, objects and spaces, imagining a future for a society that’s unsure of theirs by reconstructing a missing history and identity through stream-of-consciousness making.Utilizing vibrant colors and textures that serve as way of contrasting the stereotypes of caribbeanness with the stark reality of life in puerto rico.

︎Through their practice they explore themes of colonialism, social class, gender, displacement, mass migration, and collective memory by revisiting family history and synthesizing lived experiences through clothing and objects that reside in a future parallel dimension.
